We provide trauma informed specialist legal representation to the most at risk and vulnerable young people in contact with the criminal justice system, secure their legal community care rights and fight for systemic change. We protect and promote children’s rights, ensuring the UK Government is held to account on its child rights obligations and that children’s rights are embedded in government policy making and legislation.In 2023, JfKL refocussed its aims to build on its expertise and unique position in youth justice developed from eighteen years in the children’s legal sector. We focus on the most vulnerable children who are so often let down by the very systems set up to keep them safe and to support them to flourish. Among the most vulnerable young people are those from Black and minoritised communities who are over-represented at every stage of the criminal justice system. Application deadline: 29.11.24Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI)For decades JCWI has provided legal representation and advice to people made vulnerable and destitute by unjust immigration laws. We’ve helped tens of thousands of people secure status, keep their families together and escape poverty. We are one of the leading voices for a fairer, more just immigration system, using litigation and advocacy to challenge policies that lead to discrimination, destitution and the denial of rights. In 2023 there were 50 clients for whom we either gained refugee status, won a human rights appeal, or prevented removal. We had 40 successes at the High Court or Upper Tribunal: cancelling removal directions, setting aside unlawful decisions, liberty from detention.We represented a client due to be deported on the Rwanda flight, succeeding in getting removal directions cancelled. We spoke out against the Rwanda Scheme, with one of our lawyers interviewed by BBC Radio London and another attending the APPG for refugees to summarise the effect of the judgement. We led a cross-sector mobilisation of 100+ organisations to release a Joint Statement responding to the ruling.We led a joint coalition campaigning against the Illegal Migration Bill, and when it became an Act we began a first claim to challenge its policy of considering an asylum claim as ‘implicitly withdrawn’ if the claimant misses a part of the procedure such as a letter or appointment.We are challenging the criminalisation of asylum seekers, acting for an asylum seeker and victim of torture facing prosecution for illegal entry to the UK to claim asylum.We recently began a new Climate Justice is Migrant Justice project with a case where we raised the argument that people should not be returned back to natural disaster (in this case, Turkey); we successfully deferred the client’s removal.We challenged the discriminatory nature of the Ukraine scheme and its failure to protect non-Ukrainian nationals on behalf of a client fleeing the Ukraine who is Afghan. The client has now been granted leave to enter the UK, and other organisations have reached out to make similar challenges.We are on the steering group of the Human Rights Act coalition and we facilitate the Migration Coalition, enabling cross-sector collaborations to challenge attacks on justice and migrant rights.In 2023 we were quoted by journalists over 40 times and had a further 40 appearances on national and local TV and radio, building on our legal work to make the case for a country in which immigration law and policy are based on sound evidence and the benefits of migration are celebrated and shared.Training Location: 441 Caledonian Road, London, N7 9BGJob Title: JFF Trainee SolicitorRole Summary:We are excited to offer a Justice First Fellowship position at JCWI. Click Apply to see the different opportunities available.Become a FellowIf you are passionate about using the law to deliver social justice, and you are looking for a fantastic opportunity to complete your training and move on to the next stage in a career advancing access to justice, then the Justice First Fellowship is for you.What does the Justice First Fellowship involve?<ol><li>Training:&nbsp;a two year fully funded training period in any UK nation, including any mandatory training to be undertaken to qualify in Scotland, Northern Ireland or England &amp; Wales (e.g. a gratuitous offer of a free place at any&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bpp.com/" target="_blank">BPP</a>&nbsp;campus to complete the Professional Skills Course).</li><li>Project:&nbsp;Fellows&nbsp;gain&nbsp;practical experience&nbsp;by working on a&nbsp;project&nbsp;in collaboration with a Host organisation. Projects aim to advance access to justice, provide an opportunity&nbsp;to develop wider&nbsp;non-legal skills&nbsp;essential for a career in social justice and give a Host organisation additional capacity to build upon their work and potential sources of further funding.</li><li>Wider support, development &amp; networking:&nbsp;through attendance at sessions on project development, professional development and wider skills training (e.g. communications and fundraising), well-being support as well as access to useful networks. Building important relationships and gaining peer support from other fellows, and being part of our JFF alumni network post-qualification as well.</li></ol>Am I eligible to apply for the Fellowship?To be eligible, you need to:<ul><li>Have a relevant qualification:</li><li>England &amp; Wales:&nbsp;completed and passed (or expect to pass by 14 March 2025) the Legal Practice Course (LPC)&nbsp;or&nbsp;have an UG degree and completed and passed SQE Part 1.</li><li>Scotland:&nbsp;completed and passed (or expect to pass by 14 March 2025) the Diploma in Legal Practice/Professional Legal Practice (DLP/DPLP).</li><li>Northern Ireland:&nbsp;graduated with a recognised law degree and will need to receive notification of admission by March 2025 to the Solicitors apprenticeship scheme at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Queen’s University Belfast, commencing in September 2025.</li><li>Have the right to work in the UK</li><li>Be willing and able to commit to serving a two-year term as a Fellow commencing in April 2025.</li><li>Be able to demonstrate a commitment to social welfare law</li></ul>* Please note: if you do not meet any of the above eligibility criteria, you will not be able to apply to the scheme.How to apply?Applicants will have the option of selecting two Host organisations they would like to apply to for our 2024/25 Fellow recruitment round.<ol><li>Read the job descriptions of Fellowship positions.</li><li>Complete and submit the online application form. You will receive an automatic submission confirmation to your email address.</li><li>You will be notified by the Legal Education Foundation if you have been shortlisted for interview or not.</li><li>If shortlisted, you will be contacted by your selected Host directly to arrange an interview.</li><li>Following the interview stage, you will be contacted by your selected Host to let you know if you were successful or not.</li><li>If you are not successful at the interview stage, and you opted into clearing when you submitted your application, you could still be considered for training positions still available at other Hosts if any has not yet selected a candidate for their Fellowship position. However, this is not guaranteed.</li></ol>How are Fellows selected?Each Host organisation will receive applications from applicants who selected their organisation. Hosts do not see names, schooling history or equal opportunities data on application forms at the first stage so that the shortlisting process is anonymised and as unbiased as possible.Hosts will shortlist candidates and send invitations to interviews which will be in person or virtual. Hosts will now have full access to the shortlisted applications and shortlisted candidates may be asked for further information for example CVs.Usually interviews will include a presentation element and / or a written task which candidates will be informed of and asked to prepare in advance.A representative from the Legal Education Foundation may sit on the interview panel as an observer.Candidates with the following experience and qualities are likely to be considered more favourably:<ul><li>have a demonstrable passion for access to justice</li><li>have volunteered at charities or public interest groups in their local community</li><li>have dedicated time to serving low-income or less privileged communities</li><li>wish to effect change in the legal community</li><li>have the highest level of skills and the potential to drive innovation in future legal practice</li><li>have lived or learned experience of the issues facing the communities that the host organisation serves.</li></ul>Competition for places is intense, with only the very best and most committed going on to be selected.
