We are looking for a dynamic and committed individual to join our legal team as a Paralegal to assist our Housing and Public Law solicitors. This is a fixed term (nine months with the possibility of an extension for a further three months), part-time role (three days a week). This is an exciting role, offering opportunities for growth and development, to build your housing and public law experience and knowledge through working on emerging issues affecting victims of trafficking, and effecting change for this hugely vulnerable group.

The role involves providing housing and public law advice and representation to survivors of trafficking and slavery under a legal aid contract. The focus of the role will be to work primarily on housing cases.

We are a friendly, multidisciplinary team and this role offers the opportunity to learn and develop skills under supervision about housing and public law. You would also take part in regular meetings and discussions with colleagues practising immigration, compensation, working in finance, fundraising and operations, and who are involved in cutting edge policy work and improving survivor participation in the sector.

With significant changes to trafficking, modern slavery and immigration law and policy, this is a critical time for survivors of trafficking and labour exploitation in the UK. ATLEU is at the forefront of this vital and fast-moving area of law, bringing high-profile strategic challenges that shape the way the law develops and strengthening the protections for all survivors of trafficking.

Legal advice is an essential component in obtaining the support, safety and redress that survivors need to move forward. ATLEU works intensively with survivors over several years often assisting with multiple matters, helping to regularise their immigration status, obtain identification as a victim of trafficking, access treatment, support and appropriate housing, and claim compensation.

ATLEU welcomes applications from candidates with different levels of experience. It is envisaged that candidates may include those at the start of their legal career with limited casework experience and more experienced candidates currently practising in legal aid with housing or public law experience. If you are at the start of your career or even if you have more experience but are new to working with survivors of trafficking, we welcome your application. We offer internal training for all new starters if they are less familiar with trafficking work. Each member of the team also has a training budget for additional professional development.

We are looking for candidates who are intelligent, resilient, exceptional communicators and passionate about ATLEU’s mission and values. We are committed to promoting equality of opportunity and we positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy and maternity.

We particularly welcome applicants from those who are significantly underrepresented in our sector, such as individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.
