Training Contract/Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship - 2025 - in-house - Iceland Foods
Deadline: 17 January 2025
Description
We have a fantastic in-house legal trainee opportunity in the retail sector, for an aspiring solicitor. We are more than just exceptional lawyers here at Iceland. We attract talented aspiring lawyers, each of whom brings their own unique qualities, along with a commercial and collaborative approach, professional drive and a commitment to success. We’re sure you will enjoy working with us.
At Iceland, we value teamwork and the working environment almost as much as the work output itself. Our team is focused on commitment, reward and recognition, leadership, taking responsibility and innovation.
As a trainee, you will be exposed to a broad variety of legal work spanning many areas of legal expertise, whilst learning to take a commercial approach in an environment that stretches up and down the supply chain, from manufacturing to retail, and across a variety of sectors. The Iceland Legal Team looks after legal matters for the retail business, as well as its wider corporate group, so your working day remains fresh, from one day to the next.
You will work on everything from commercial agreements and queries, brand licensing, marketing, corporate transactions, competition and regulatory matters, to employment advisory and disputes, data protection matters and defendant litigation work (including public liability, employer’s liability, and motor claims).
We are committed to helping you realise your full potential. As well as learning on the job, you will enjoy the support of the wider Legal Team and be mentored by a senior solicitor throughout your training and beyond.
We can offer a training contract, or may be able to offer a graduate solicitor apprenticeship, depending on your existing qualifications, and where you are on your legal training journey.
Job description
Our training contract is designed to offer you the breadth of experience and training needed to become a well-rounded in-house solicitor, confident to provide legal advice on a broad range of legal matters. You will be given responsibility from an early stage and the opportunity to work alongside senior solicitors and key stakeholders throughout the business.
Our training contracts consist of four seats, each lasting six months, in corporate, commercial, employment and defendant litigation. During your training, you will have access to contentious and non-contentious work, and you will have regular performance reviews with your supervising solicitor. They will help you develop the skills you need to deal with the demanding work you will come across every day and they will guide you and ensure that you are actively involved in their work and the work of the team. You will have the opportunity to refine your skills and specialise in the discipline you qualify into.
What we are looking for
It is the quality of the candidate that is important to us. We are looking for candidates with:
- a degree at 2:1 standard (either law degree, or non-law with conversion/SQE preparation course);

- commercial awareness;
- good communication and interpersonal skills;
- resolve, resilience, and a conscientious nature;
- independent thought and curiosity;
- a range of interests outside of the law;
- a good sense of humour (this is a must!); and
- a willingness to take on responsibility.
If you have these qualities, then we would like to hear from you. Prior completion of the SQE is preferable, but not required.
Recruitment process
Candidates will undertake a range of assessments to showcase their skills, including a written exercise, short presentation and formal interview.
